Rebekka Berthold is a 23 years old Fine Art student from Saarbrücken, focusing almost exclusively on the human body, what it tells her, the story of her body and the story other bodies tell her every day. Hundred trillion cells, hundred trillion atoms in each of those cells and a hundred billion brain cells. In her paintings she plays with the ambivalence of the near-infinite nature of a physical self and the common simplification by thinking about the self in terms of larger pieces.
This series represents the well-known dream experience of losing control over body parts. It demonstrates variations on the relationship between the self and its body which violate the standard norm of ‘one person in one body’.
Many persons in a single body.
Many bodies in a single person.
The unity of the subject is obliterated.
