Mateo Sanchez

University of Amsterdam

Mateo Sanchez is currently coursing his Research Masters in Philosophy at the University of Amsterdam. He is currently writing his thesis on psychedelic experiences as seen through the tradition of philosophical phenomenology, most notably the work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty. His work focuses on the reinterpretation of the category of ‘experience’ and its political implications. By looking at the study of psychedelics through this angle, he aims not only to better understand these experiences but to explore the (oft-mentioned) political potential of these substances. More broadly, then, his interest in phenomenology and psychedelics is part of his ongoing engagement with critical posthumanism.

Connecting People: Psychedelics, phenomenology, psychiatry, posthumanism

This presentation argues that a posthuman phenomenology that focuses on embodied experience is key to understanding psychedelic experiences and their therapeutic value. This approach offers an alternative to the frequent discussions between scientific and spiritual interpretations of experience which nevertheless agree that it happens somewhere in our heads – either in the brain or the mind.
