Karl Kristjan Kaup, MSc.

University of Tartu

Karl Kristjan Kaup is a doctoral student in the University of Tartu investigating altered states of consciousness. Driven by a curiosity to understand the nature of the world, Kristjan explored the field of physics during his Bachelor’s and Master’s studies, but has since shifted his focus towards investigating the enigmatic nature of the mind – the very tool through which we perceive and comprehend the world around us. Currently, his research is primarily centered around the profound experiences induced by psychedelics. Using an interdisciplinary approach, he seeks to examine the intricate phenomenology of these altered states, drawing on insights from diverse fields such as neuroscience, cognitive science, philosophy, and biophysics. Furthermore, he seeks to unravel the mechanisms by which such states of consciousness foster transformative insights, catalyze changes in beliefs, and promote therapeutic effects that positively impact mental well-being.
