Carla Alexandra Soares is a master’s student in Psychology with a specialization in Deviant Behavior and Justice at the University of Porto. After studying the social construction of the drug phenomenon including the drug policies and their impact on human rights, she became interested in its reconstruction through analysis of non-problematic use. She looks at the growing recognition of the therapeutic role of psychedelics as a way of rethinking the actual drug views and approaches.
Her qualitative research explores the psychedelic experience from the point of view of users and through the lens of self-care, a key concept within the field of healthy functioning and well-being. Specifically, she investigated whether participants use psychedelics to take care of themselves and through what psychological processes this happens. Her main aim is to provide phenomenological insights into the role of these substances in psychotherapy and health highlighting the meanings and functions underlying the psychedelic states.
The main objective of this research is to understand and to describe to what extent the use of psychedelic substances constitutes a practice of self-care to the users.
