Amrita Dhillon is an Indian artist working primarily in painting. Born in New Delhi, India, she now lives and works permanently in Berlin. She received her education in the Liberal Arts at Bard College in New York, and Bard College Berlin, majoring in German History, Art History and Philosophy. In the fall of 2019, she will begin her further studies in Fine Arts at the University of the Arts in Berlin. Dealing with the space between reality and imagination, her work incorporates both personal and found imagery – memories gathered during her time in India, The United States and Germany.
Midnight Rider (2018) is part of a series titled ‘Carousel.’ British artist Mark Gertler’s 1916 painting ‘Merry-Go-Round’, which depicts wounded soldiers on a carousel during a country fair, contributed to the initial inspiration for this series. Experimentations with colour, shape and rhythm consider the carousel spin as an analogy for the dream state. Figures caught in the rush of its movement straddle the line between ecstasy and nightmare. And at the center of it all, the carousel horse – simultaneously heroic and demonic – becomes the ideal protagonist for this work.
