This workshop is an initiation to microphenomenology, a sophisticated semi-structured interview technique developed by Pierre Vermersch and Claire Petitmengin to elicit fine-grained and reliable introspective and retrospective descriptions of subjective experience. The microphenomenological interview technique was designed in the spirit of Francisco Varela’s neurophenomenological program, which aimed at bridging the gap between the methods of neuroscience and the study of first-person experience. In this workshop, participants will learn how to interview a subject with the goal of gaining insight into the lived experience of a short conscious episode while minimizing the risk of confabulation. The workshop will involve several practice sessions in small group, and focus in particular on the application of the technique to the scientific study of altered states of consciousness.
