I am an anthropologist with over 40 years of experience in archaeology and ethnography. I completed my Ph.D. in anthropology at the Univ. of New Mexico. My archaeological interests focus on hunter-gatherer adaptations to different and changing environments. I have performed long-term ethnographic fieldwork with Savanna Pumé hunter-gatherers in Venezuela and with Maya agriculturalists in the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico.

My research with Savanna Pumé introduced me to the frequent use of Anadenanthera peregrina snuff and subsidiary use of Banisteriopsis caapi. I also have ethnographic experience among Native American groups in the U.S. Southwest and with subsistence fishermen of coastal Louisiana. I am the Director of the Office of Contract Archeology at the Univ. of New Mexico, an Adjunct Research Associate Professor in the Dept. of Anthropology at UNM, and hold research appointments at the Peabody Museum, Harvard Univ., the PENN Museum, and the Univ. of Utah.
